The first day at work was good. The lessons have not started yet, so these two weeks would be kinda relaxing for me as I only need to do preparations for the semester. That said, when lessons actually start I don’t think it would be that relaxing because apparently I have to do three modules, in which two of them I would be the lecturer and tutor and course coordinator all at the same time! I’ll be doing two Internet-related course, as well as a maths course. I’m not too worried about those Internet courses, but I’m not too sure about the maths one. After all the last time I did any serious maths was way back in JC, which was like 8 years ago…
From what I’ve gathered so far, I’m going to have two long holidays during the semester. – Nine days for Chinese New Year (17 Feb – 25 Feb) and seven for easter (4 Apr – 10 Apr). And since quite a few of the public holidays fall in the first half of the year, it looks like there would be quite a few breaks for me. While that certainly sounds nice, it does pose some kind of problems for me because I think I might have to make up for the lessons that the my students would miss because of these holidays. In one of the modules the class would actually miss 6 hours out of the 75 that they have to fulfill for the module in the entire semester. I don’t mind doing the makeup classes, but I’m not sure if the students themselves like the idea or not!
One of my colleagues was telling me that handling the students at IVE would be a challenge because the students will not buy that kind of old-style stern-faced teaching methods. Instead they would be more receptive to teachers being their friends, and be nice to them without losing the kind of “authority” that a teacher should have over the students. Now that sounds like an art to me, and I’m sure I can try to master it somehow. After all, I’m taking students who are around 17 to 18 years in age, so I guess being a big brother to them is something that I would probably be doing.
In any case, I believe there will be more settling in for me to do, and I’m looking forward to know more people and gain some interesting experience!
